Should you repair or replace your windshield?

Don’t Neglect Chips and Cracks in Your Windshield
Should you fix that annoying chip or crack in your windshield–or replace it entirely? The answer is: it depends.

Chips and cracks can be fixed using a specialized resin that seals the chip and prevents further cracking. The result is a windshield that looks perfectly new; however, appearance may not be the only factor to consider.

Think of a windshield repair as first-aid that prevents the damage from getting worse. In some cases, it may look nearly perfect, while in others, it could still appear slightly blemished. But in either case, a proper repair prevents damage from spreading.

Did you know that your windshield is an integral part of your vehicle safety system? It’s part of the Safety Restraint System, and is intended to keep vehicle occupants within the confines of the passenger compartment in the event of a collision, as well as maintain the structural integrity of the roof in a roll-over.

When to Consider Replacement Over Repair

Reduced Visibility – Over time, road debris and loose gravel can cause the windshield to become pitted and scratched, reducing overall visibility.

Compromised Structural Integrity – The windshield is designed to support the roof, preventing it from collapsing and crushing occupants during an accident. Depending on the severity and location of the crack, the windshield may no longer provide adequate support.

Dangerous Blind Spots – Sometimes slight imperfections remain after the repair that may decrease visibility if the cracks are located directly in the driver’s line-of-sight.

Impaired Airbag Function – Often the passenger side airbag relies on the windshield to ensure proper deployment, bouncing off the windshield before being directed toward the passenger. A damaged windshield could crack under the force of the airbag, rendering this safety mechanism useless.

If you are in need of a new windshield for your car, give us a call today. Our skilled technicians can recommend the best course of action for your vehicle to keep your family safe and secure.

Rain Has Arrived!

The Sacramento Valley was very excited to welcome rain in this week’s forecast! While most of the news is positive, the much-needed sprinkle also reminds us of the importance of driving safely this time of year.

During warmer months, when we go weeks without any precipitation, oil and grease from automobiles collects on the asphalt. Later in the season, as the rain begins to fall, this collection of slippery material can make the roads especially hazardous for drivers. Even though it isn’t summer, our recent lack of rain may have allowed the oil and grease to accumulate once more.

To help avoid a collision, you can take several steps when driving, including reducing your speed, leaving additional space between you and the car in front of you, and braking gentle to prevent skidding. And, in California, it is also a state law to turn on your headlights if the weather requires you to use your windshield wipers.
